Hartford: The fight for public education

Hartford: The fight for public education

April 19 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

The Fight for Public Education The Growing Movement Against the Corporate Attack on Our Schools The battle for the future of public education is heating up in school districts across the country. Every day we see news reports about the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, the high stakes testing, mass school closures, the expansion of Charter schools, and ongoing attacks onteachers and their unions. Yet the resistance to these attacks is growing and gaining momentum. The Network for Public Education just held its first annual conference in Austin, Texas, and United Opt Out’s national conference is being organized in Colorado. In Los Angeles an insurgent slate of rank and file teachers just won the leadership of the second largest local in the country. And in Portland, Oregon, teachers won a major victory in a contract battle after threatening to strike. Here in Connecticut new organizations are forming and winning victories from New London to Bridgeport, Hartford and beyond. Join us for a panel discussion to discuss the many issues surrounding education reform. Speakers: Ebony Murphy-Root has taught in a public school, a magnet school and is now teaching in a progressive private school in New York City Josh Blanchfield is a Hartford teacher and activist Laurel Sturt taught for a decade in the Bronx and just authored the book Davonte's Inferno: Ten Years in the New York Public School Gulag Tokuji Okamoto is a member of Socialist Action Member of New London Parents Advocates to be announced
