NO TRUST IN COPS, COURTS OR POLITICIANS! STAY IN THE STREETS!
THIS RACIST SYSTEM HAS GOT TO GO!
By Marty Goodman, May 23, 2023
The May 1st murder of Jordan Neely, a homeless Black man, revealed the brutal gulf that exists between rich and poor, Black and white in New York City. Neely died at the hands of ex-Marine Sargent Daniel Penny, who applied a deadly chokehold on him inside a subway F train. Neely, who had mental illness, cried out, “I’m hungry! I’m ready to die!” When police arrived, Penny was questioned but soon released without charges by the racist NYPD, without protest from Democratic Party Mayor Eric Adams, an ex-Major in the racist NYPD.
No doubt, if it was a Black man that had strangled a white man, he would have been thrown into NYC jail immediately – and likely get beaten-up by racist cops on the way! Equality under capitalism is a sham!
As reported in The Daily News, Johnny Grima and James King came to a vigil for Neely. They said they witnessed Neely die. “They f—ing killed him, man. They choked him ‘til he went unconscious and then they kept choking him,” Grima said.
In the racist murders of Eric Garner and George Floyd both famously cried out, “I can’t breathe!” The chokehold is a deadly weapon that can kill after only 2 or 3 minutes. As a trained Marine Penny knew that.
Ten days later charges were finally filed against Penny for 2nd degree murder after much public outrage and many demonstrations, including an occupation of the train tracks where Neely died. Penny is now free on $100,000 bond. His trial is scheduled to begin July 17.
Right-wingers like Governor Ron De Santis and other right-wing nuts have raised over $2.7 million for Penny who De Santis outrageously described as, “a good Samaritan.” Homelessness is at a crisis stage, peaking under Bloomberg, De Blasio and now Adams. In NYC under Democratic Party rule there is an unprecedented 74,000 homeless population. Nationally, under Biden, there are nearly 600,000 homeless in the richest country in the world! African Americans are only 13% of the U.S. population but 40% of the homeless. Adams’ “new” homeless plan, in addition to police homeless sweeps in the subway, includes a mere 50 more inpatient beds for the mentally ill in a city of over 8 million. The homeless need shelter, support, training and jobs! We say tax Wall Street and Real Estate big shots for more money to combat the homeless crisis!
This racist system has got to go! Capitalism breeds a sick culture of brutality and war, racism, exploitation, sexism and LGBTQI oppression. Socialist Action has never supported any politician of the two billionaire run parties. We are for a mass independent working-class party based on a reinvigorated, democratic labor movement in alliance with the organizations of the oppressed.
Let’s stay mobilized and in the streets. Justice for Jordan Neely! Join us!
