West Chicago IL: IN the face of violent ICE raids that seek to terrorize and paralyze the Latino community, in nearby Elgin and Bensenville, the West Chicago community is coming together to withdraw en masse from work and school, and will come together for a community march and rally: ICE Hands off of our WeGo! A Day Without Immigrants March and Rally. The morning rally will bring together the local Latino community from West Chicago, activists from Casa Dupage Workers Center, based in Wheaton and our allies from the faith community to call out ICE terrorism that has targeted our families, friends and neighbors in the Latino community and will begin with a rally at the heavily travelled intersection of 38 and 59- in the heart of West Chicago. The rally is part of Immigrant Solidarity Dupage’s “ICE out of the Barrio” initiative which is organizing community defense networks, marchs and protests and neighborhood community to not only report ICE activity but also to activity confront it in mass.
February 3 will be a Day without Immigrants, a general strike, we will not buy, we will not work and we will not go to school. United we will protest ICE under the direction of the racist Trump Administration, targeting the local Latino community with raids, operations and other terror tactics in conjunction with other federal agencies like the DEA, Federal Marshalls and others on Tuesday January 28. The campaign of terror has seen dozens of agents descend upon the area in an operation of organized racism with the goal of freaking the Latino community out, retaliating against Illinois for its immigrant friendly policies and what is seen by many workers, carried out in conjunction with the bosses seeking to frighten Latino workers at local, mostly food factories, to not struggle for workplace rights, higher wages and against abusive conditions in the area. In the face of the fear, the community, with a long history of struggle in West Chicago for immigrant rights, against COVID contagions that disproportionately affected Latinos at the Jel-Sert Factory and other area workplaces, a community which has struggled against environmental racism at the Kerr McGee facility and against a second garbage dump of the LRS company— is replacing fear with struggle, anxiety with solidarity and weakness with community strength, ICE out of West Chicago and for that matter, all of Illinois!
Says Casa DuPage Workers Center Executive Organizer Cristobal Cavazos, “IN unity is power, the Latino worker gives, but the Latino worker can also take away– and this withdraw has the potential to sabotage the rich and powerful and their power structure– the local bosses, along with bankers and politicians know this better than anyone! West Chicago is our city, from the buildings built, to the majority of new restaurants and stores, to the landscaping, to the incredible levels of production in West Chicago factories, and shipments moving in its warehouses, there is a Mexican worker making it all happen, I think everyone knows this! West Chicago, one of the few majority Latino towns in Dupage, is the home of our family, friends and neighbors, we love this town, our children were born here, and no one is going to tell us we can’t be here. The great Mexican hero Emiliano Zapata once said, “the land belongs to those who work it,” and never has than been more clear than in West Chicago, where in a state, Illinois, that is losing population, all that is authentic, creative, growing and good comes from the Latino community. For it is in in West Chicago where we find the most essential workers of all- the Latino workers- and no one is going to run us out of our land! They call us part of an immigrant invasion, come on— were the Irish, German and Italian immigrant workers who came before us also invaders? The Mexican community has been in West Chicago for more than 100 years! I think the only invasive species in the area is ICE, and we want to send a clear message on this Day of the Immigrant, that ICE is not welcome in West Chicago or any other part of the barrio!”
Says Gabriela Hernandez Chico, Co-Director of Casa Dupage Workers Center, “we will not be moved by fear, we will not be neutralized and marginalized by Donald Trump’s ICE Agents. In West Chicago, the largest racial and ethnic group in the city is the Latino community, it is us who pay the taxes, send our children to the schools, pay the salaries of village officials and do the lion’s share of the work, we are many, and we will not be moved by these racist bullies. We are many and we are more united than ever and as we are a people of respect and with a deep sense of justice—- never do we come together more than in the face of injustice. Our great hero Benito Juarez once said “Respect towards all is the key to peace,” but when Mexicans are actively being disrespected and hated, the consequences- The Mexican Revolution, The Mexican War of Independence and the Zapatista Uprising, among others- the consequences can be drastic and we are seeing in this moment the awaking of this once “sleeping giant.”
Says, Mateo Suarez, West Chicago Activist, “I have lived in West Chicago for many years, I have raised my children here, sent my children to Elgin schools, worked in the factories and warehouse, I walk through the streets and hang out with my neighbors, I married my wife here, I buy at its stores, I am not part of West Chicago because of the color of my skin? I love my community and all the precious Latino life in my community, these are our neighbors, wives, children and abuelos. Now ICE is trying to fill of us with fear? We are not going to take it! We are going to take the streets, thousands from the community, for all to see, that West Chicago is our WeGo and we are not going to go. And we even love West Chicago so much that we are not to sit by as our friends and neighbors are terrorized– this is love in action. An injury to one is an injury to all and we are going to make it clear ICE is not welcome here!
Says Casa DuPage Workers Center Organizer Angel Cruz, “In light of the recent ICE operations in the State of Illinois against our Latino community, the Casa DuPage Workers Center, with allies in the city of Elgin and its surroundings, are calling for this great popular march “ICE Out of West Chicago” and we will be protesting in the heart of West Chicago. The Trump administration is terrorizing working Latino families and harshly punishing our community with its racist anti-immigrant policies. Do we want to flee or do we want to fight? WE will Fight! We seek for thousands of us to leave our homes to protest against fear, to reject the raids, to reject the deportations, to reject the terror they want to impose. Trump’s fear is having the opposite effect, we are more united than ever and a latent fire has been stoked that is growing, the fire of indignation. We want to tell this administration that it is only because of immigrant workers, this country is as powerful as it is. WE have worked our asses off! This is the “nation of immigrants.” In spite of the rhetoric and lies, we are a peaceful people, fighting for equality, opportunity, but yes we are going to defend our barrio—this is where we live and work, where our hearts live. WE have dignity— This is our home! The vast majority of Mexican immigrants have been in this country for several decades, we pay taxes, we contribute every day to the economy of this country, and we are not criminals to be treated this way like common criminals, and because we have self- respect and integrity, we will defend our community.”

West Chicago IL: ANTE las violentas redadas de ICE que buscan aterrorizar y paralizar a la comunidad latina, en las cercanas Elgin y Bensenville, la comunidad de West Chicago se está uniendo para retirarse en masa del trabajo y la escuela, y se unirá para una marcha y manifestación comunitaria: ¡ICE Manos Fuera de Nuestro WeGo! Marcha y manifestación Un Día Sin Inmigrantes. La manifestación de la mañana reunirá a la comunidad latina local de West Chicago, activistas del Centro de Trabajadores Casa Dupage, con sede en Wheaton y nuestros aliados de la comunidad religiosa para denunciar el terrorismo de ICE que ha atacado a nuestras familias, amigos y vecinos en la comunidad latina y comenzará con una manifestación en la muy transitada intersección de la 38 y la 59, en el corazón de West Chicago. La manifestación es parte de la iniciativa “ICE fuera del Barrio” de Immigrant Solidarity Dupage, que está organizando redes de defensa comunitaria, marchas y protestas y a la comunidad del barrio no solo para denunciar la actividad de ICE sino también para enfrentarla en masa.
El 3 de febrero será un Día sin Inmigrantes, una huelga general, no compraremos, no trabajaremos y no iremos a la escuela. Unidos protestaremos contra ICE bajo la dirección de la administración racista de Trump, que ataca a la comunidad latina local con redadas, operaciones y otras tácticas terroristas en conjunto con otras agencias federales como la DEA, Federal Marshalls y otras el martes 28 de enero. La campaña de terror ha visto a docenas de agentes descender sobre el área en una operación de racismo organizado con el objetivo de asustar a la comunidad latina, tomando represalias contra Illinois por sus políticas favorables a los inmigrantes y lo que muchos trabajadores ven, llevado a cabo en conjunto con los patrones que buscan asustar a los trabajadores latinos en las fábricas locales, en su mayoría de alimentos, para que no luchen por los derechos laborales, salarios más altos y contra las condiciones abusivas en el área. Frente al miedo, la comunidad, con una larga historia de lucha en West Chicago por los derechos de los inmigrantes, contra los contagios de COVID que afectaron desproporcionadamente a los latinos en la fábrica Jel-Sert y otros lugares de trabajo del área, una comunidad que ha luchado contra el racismo ambiental en las instalaciones de Kerr McGee y contra un segundo vertedero de basura de la empresa LRS, está reemplazando el miedo con la lucha, la ansiedad con la solidaridad y la debilidad con la fuerza comunitaria. ¡Fuera ICE de West Chicago y, de hecho, de todo Illinois!
Dice el organizador ejecutivo del Centro de Trabajadores de Casa DuPage, Cristóbal Cavazos, “En la unidad está el poder, el trabajador latino da, pero el trabajador latino también puede quitar, y esta retirada tiene el potencial de sabotear a los ricos y poderosos y su estructura de poder; los jefes locales, junto con los banqueros y los políticos lo saben mejor que nadie. West Chicago es nuestra ciudad, desde los edificios construidos, hasta la mayoría de los nuevos restaurantes y tiendas, hasta el paisajismo, hasta los increíbles niveles de producción en las fábricas de West Chicago y los envíos que se mueven en sus almacenes, hay un trabajador mexicano que hace que todo suceda, ¡creo que todos lo saben! West Chicago, una de las pocas ciudades de mayoría latina en Dupage, es el hogar de nuestra familia, amigos y vecinos, amamos esta ciudad, nuestros hijos nacieron aquí y nadie nos va a decir que no podemos estar aquí. El gran héroe mexicano Emiliano Zapata dijo una vez, “la tierra pertenece a quienes la trabajan”, y nunca ha sido más claro que en West Chicago, donde en un estado, Illinois, que está perdiendo población, todo lo que es auténtico, creativo, El crecimiento y el bien vienen de la comunidad latina. Porque es en West Chicago donde encontramos a los trabajadores más esenciales de todos, los trabajadores latinos, ¡y nadie nos va a echar de nuestra tierra! Nos llaman parte de una invasión inmigrante, vamos, ¿los trabajadores inmigrantes irlandeses, alemanes e italianos que vinieron antes que nosotros también fueron invasores? ¡La comunidad mexicana ha estado en West Chicago por más de 100 años! Creo que la única especie invasora en el área es ICE, y queremos enviar un mensaje claro en este Día del Inmigrante, ¡que ICE no es bienvenido en West Chicago ni en ninguna otra parte del barrio!
Dice Gabriela Hernández Chico, codirectora del Centro de Trabajadores de Casa Dupage, “no nos moveremos por el miedo, no seremos neutralizados ni marginados por los agentes de ICE de Donald Trump. En West Chicago, el grupo racial y étnico más grande de la ciudad es la comunidad latina, somos nosotros quienes pagamos los impuestos, enviamos a nuestros hijos a las escuelas, pagamos los salarios de los funcionarios del pueblo y hacemos la mayor parte del trabajo, somos muchos, y vamos a luchar. Somos muchos y estamos más unidos que nunca y como somos un pueblo de respeto y con un profundo sentido de la justicia, nunca nos unimos más que ante la injusticia. Nuestro gran héroe Benito Juárez dijo una vez: “El respeto ajeno es la paz”, pero cuando los mexicanos son activamente irrespetados y odiados, las consecuencias -la Revolución Mexicana, la Guerra de Independencia de México y el Levantamiento Zapatista, entre otras- pueden ser drásticas y estamos viendo en este momento el despertar de este otrora “gigante dormido”.
Mateo Suárez, activista de West Chicago, dice: “He vivido en West Chicago durante muchos años, he criado a mis hijos aquí, he enviado a mis hijos a las escuelas de Elgin, he trabajado en las fábricas y almacenes, camino por las calles y paso el rato con mis vecinos, me casé con mi esposa aquí, compro en sus tiendas, ¿no soy parte de West Chicago por el color de mi piel? Amo a mi comunidad y toda la preciosa vida latina en mi comunidad, estos son nuestros vecinos, esposas, hijos y abuelos. ¿Ahora ICE está tratando de llenarnos de miedo? ¡No lo vamos a soportar! Vamos a tomar las calles, miles de personas de la comunidad, para que todos vean que West Chicago es nuestro WeGo y no vamos a ir. E incluso amamos tanto a West Chicago que no vamos a quedarnos de brazos cruzados mientras nuestros amigos y vecinos son aterrorizados: esto es amor en acción. Una herida a uno es una herida a todos y vamos a dejar en claro que ICE no es bienvenido aquí.
A la luz de la organización del Centro de Trabajadores de Casa DuPage, Angel Cruz, “A la luz de la Ante los recientes operativos de ICE en el Estado de Illinois contra nuestra comunidad latina, el Centro de Trabajadores Casa DuPage, con aliados en la ciudad de Elgin y sus alrededores, estamos convocando a esta gran marcha popular “ICE Out of West Chicago” y estaremos protestando en el corazón de West Chicago. La administración Trump está aterrorizando a las familias trabajadoras latinas y castigando duramente a nuestra comunidad con sus políticas racistas anti inmigrantes. ¿Queremos huir o queremos luchar? ¡Lucharemos! Buscamos que miles de nosotros salgamos de nuestras casas para protestar contra el miedo, para rechazar las redadas, para rechazar las deportaciones, para rechazar el terror que quieren imponer. El miedo de Trump está teniendo el efecto contrario, estamos más unidos que nunca y se ha avivado un fuego latente que va en aumento, el fuego de la indignación. Queremos decirle a esta administración que es solo por los trabajadores inmigrantes, que este país es tan poderoso como es. ¡Nos hemos partido el trasero trabajando! Esta es la “nación de inmigrantes”. A pesar de la retórica y las mentiras, somos un pueblo pacífico que lucha por la igualdad, las oportunidades, pero sí vamos a defender nuestro barrio, aquí es donde vivimos y trabajamos, donde viven nuestros corazones. Tenemos dignidad, ¡este es nuestro hogar! La gran mayoría de los inmigrantes mexicanos hemos estado en este país durante varias décadas, pagamos impuestos, contribuimos todos los días a la economía de este país y no somos criminales para que nos traten de esta manera como criminales comunes, y porque tenemos respeto propio y integridad, defenderemos a nuestra comunidad”.
